PILOT OBJECTIVES

Concrete water tower (first half of the XX century, with severe degradation, mainly on the side exposed to the sea due combined action of chloride rich air and erosion from air-borne sand grains).
A Reinforced Concrete Water Tower from the 1st half of the XX century with severe degradation is being Restored. One of the pilot projects under the Reshealience Project to validate the capacity of the UHDC and the new developments.
The work carried out by our partner University of Malta. Interesting updates from the project like Durability and Structural Health Monitoring System: Innovative materials like UHDC and TRC and techniques are being used throughout the restoration with an appreciation and respect for the original materials, structure, and form of construction. Embedded sensors were installed to monitor the structural health of this unique structure in Malta.

The University of Malta under the guidance of Prof. Ruben Paul Borg took it upon itself to safeguard this unique industrial structure by carrying out an intensive restoration project.
The Planning Commission within the Planning Authority has approved permits for restoration to commence on the unique concrete structure which used to serve as a water storage tank for washing purposes at the Marsa abattoir.
